After losing Gardner Minshew to free agency, the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly found their new backup quarterback in a trade with the New York Jets.
Per reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter and multiple others, the Jets are finalizing a trade that will send quarterback Justin Fields to the Chiefs, pending a physical. Kansas City is expected to send a 2027 sixth-round draft pick to the Jets in exchange for Fields, the sources told Schefter.
Other teams were interested, sources told Schefter, but Fields' preference was to go to Kansas City. The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract last March, but he struggled as the team's starting quarterback and was eventually benched for Tyrod Taylor.
In Kansas City, Fields will back up Patrick Mahomes, who is returning from a torn ACL. Minshew, Mahomes' backup last season, signed in free agency with the Arizona Cardinals.
