Trevor Lawrence tripped, got up and scrambled for a one yard touchdown with 23 seconds remaining, turning a laughable miscue into an improbable score , and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28 on Monday Night Football in Jacksonville.&nbsp; 

Patrick Mahomes accounted for two touchdowns, and Kareem Hunt ran for two more scores for Kansas City, which had won 23 straight when leading by at least 14 points. The Chiefs took an early 14-0 lead, thanks in part to a fumble by Lawrence at the goal line.&nbsp; After the teams exchanged punts on three consecutive drives, Kansas City first scored in the opening quarter with a two yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Travis Kelce.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After Lawrence's fumble at the goal line, ending a nine play drive by the Jaguars, the Chiefs needed just five plays to drive down for the score to extend the lead with Mahomes using his legs this time, rushing in for a nine yard touchdown.&nbsp; &nbsp;Jacksonville answered with a long 13 play drive down the field to cut the score to one possession, Lawrence finding Parker Washington for a three yard touchdown pass.&nbsp; Kansas City went to halftime up 14-7.&nbsp;

Jaguars two-way standout Travis Hunter made two big-time plays, including the fourth-longest reception by a rookie this season. Hunter hauled in a 44-yarder in the third quarter.&nbsp; The Heisman Trophy winner jumped and reached over Chamarri Conner to snare the ball and then held on despite getting his legs wiped out by Bryan Cook. The Jaguars scored four plays later on a 10 yard rushing touchdown from Lawrence to tie the game at 14-all.

Disaster struck as Kanas City was marching down the field to answer the touchdown.&nbsp; Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd, the AFC defensive player of the month for September, returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest interception return by a linebacker in NFL history.&nbsp; On the ensuing drive, the Chiefs were forced to punt, but then Trent McDuffie got his first interception of the season, setting up Kansas City to drive to tie the game.

Two plays after the interception, Hunt found the endzone for his first touchdown of the night to tie the game at 21.&nbsp; Jaguars kicker Cam Little hit a 52 yard field goal to put Jacksonville up by three points on the next drive, but again the Chiefs drove down as the teams traded blows, scoring after a 12 play drive, Hunt rushing in again from two yards out, to put Kansas City up 28-24.&nbsp; Before Lawrence led his game winning drive.&nbsp;

Lawrence was perfect when it mattered most for the Jaguars. He dropped a precision pass to Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard gain on the go-ahead drive and then hit Dyami Brown for another big gain.&nbsp; Conner was flagged for pass interference against Thomas on the next play, setting up Lawrence's trip and score.&nbsp; The crazy ending halted the Jags' eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs.

Mahomes was 29-for-41 through the air for 318 yards with a touchdown and an interception, adding six rushes for 60 yards and a score.&nbsp; Hunt rushed seven times for 49 yards with two touchdowns, while Isiah Pacheco ran seven times for 36 yards.&nbsp; Tyquan Thornton had three catches for 90 yards.&nbsp; Kelce had seven catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Wide receiver Xavier Worthy hobbled off the field in the third quarter after appearing to tweak an ankle but returned a few plays later. Worthy had been listed as questionable because he got off the team flight with a swollen ankle. Chiefs rookie left tackle Josh Simmons played despite being added to the injury report shortly before kickoff with an illness.

The Chiefs (2-3) next host the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 7:20pm with pregame at 6 on both KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM) and Q Country 92.7 (92.7 FM).

Chiefs can't overcome Lawrence's late rush in 31-28 loss to Jaguars on MNF

ATCHISON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Monday in the 400 block South U.S.73 Highway in Atchison.

A 2003 Toyota Highlander driven by Gary Bewley, 72, Atchison, was exiting a parking lot on the east side of U.S. 73, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

The Toyota and a northbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Walter Pierce, 61, Atchison, collided.

EMS transported Bewley to Amberwell Hospital for examination.&nbsp; Police released no additional details.

Kan. man hospitalized after pickup, SUV crash

HARRISON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Monday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1993 GMC Sierra driven by a 57-year-old Waynesville man was southbound on Route EE eight miles north of New Hampton. The pickup traveled off the west side of the road into a creek. The vehicle struck an embankment and came to rest partially submerged.

Grand River EMS transported the driver to Mosaic Albany. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

MERER COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Monday in Mercer County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;2024 Can-am Commander driven by a 52-year-old Princeton man was eastbound on U.S. 36 at Route CC six miles east of Mount Moriah. The UTV traveled off the south side of the road and the driver overcorrected.. The vehicle returned to the road , crossed the center line and overturned.

Mercer County ambulance transported the driver to Harrison County Community Hospital. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

The fall season brings increased deer movement, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol wants drivers to be on the lookout.  

Seargent Shane Hux with Troop H says this time of year at any time of the day you can see deer along the roadway 

"Primarily early morning, and then as well at dusk, seems like to be the more prevalent times,” Hux tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. 

Hux says with harvest season happening deer are being pushed out of their habitats.  He says it is also the deer’s mating season which adds to their movement.  

Hux says if you come across a deer in the roadway, you should not try to swerve to avoid it 

"Cause what we see a lot of is people that swerve to miss a deer, then their vehicle travels off the roadway, they overcorrect, and it causes the vehicle to overturn,” Hux explains.  “So the crash turns into a serious crash when it could have been maybe a minor crash because they struck the deer.” 

Hux says instead, if you see a deer, you should be sure to decrease your speed and maintain a visual on the deer.  Hux also says if you can't get stopped, sometimes it's better to just hit the deer, rather than risk more serious injury.  

Hux says if you do hit a deer, you might not have to report it for insurance, but you should still contact the highway patrol 

"We also want to make sure that that deer carcass is not still in the roadway after someone hits a deer, because that becomes another hazard for other motorists, so we always lik to remove those from the roadway,” Hux says. “So, call us, even if you don’t need a report, call us, we can send a trooper out to respond to that area to make sure that there’s not a hazard of that carcass still being out in the roadway.” 

In 2024, there were 2,952 crashes with deer, with four deaths and 420 injuries reported according to the Highway Patrol. 

MSHP says to look out for deer as fall season rolls around

The state’s request calls for SNAP restrictions and expanded incentives for healthy purchases, but nonprofit and industry leaders are concerned that nutritious food will remain out of reach for many

MOBERLY — Programs to help lower-income Missourians stretch their food benefits allow many families to put fresh produce on their tables, said Kara Bunten, director of the Randolph County Farmers Market, on Thursday, the last market of the year.

Families rely on these programs “to feed their family fresh fruits and vegetables at a reduced rate, so they’re not spending all the money off their cards,” Bunten said.

Those programs, currently supported with $2 million annually of state funds, could get more help under a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP or food stamps, waiver application filed last week with federal officials by the Missouri Department of Social Services.

But that same waiver could bar recipients from buying soft drinks, candy and ready-to-eat desserts. And those restrictions, critics say, could mean even fewer choices for consumers in areas&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2022/02/07/missouri-bills-would-offer-incentives-for-grocery-stores-urban-farms-to-eliminate-food-deserts/">classified as food deserts</a>.&nbsp;

In addition to “headache and complications,”&nbsp;the proposed restrictions could increase stigma and “cause a lot more people to not want to use those benefits,” said Christine Woody, food security policy manager at Empower Missouri, a nonprofit that&nbsp;advocates on behalf of low-income residents.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://governor.mo.gov/media/pdf/missouri-snap-waiver-request" target="_blank">waiver,</a>&nbsp;with a projected implementation in October 2026, needs approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which operates the SNAP program.&nbsp;

The request was filed after Gov. Mike Kehoe issued an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sos.mo.gov/CMSImages/Library/Reference/Orders/2025/25-30.pdf" target="_blank">executive order</a>&nbsp;Sunday calling on the department to run SNAP “in a manner that prioritizes healthy foods.” It comes as federal changes passed by Congress in July narrow eligibility to receive benefits and impose additional costs on the state to ensure that SNAP users meet stricter work requirements.&nbsp;

In August,&nbsp;<a href="https://dss.mo.gov/re/pdf/fsd_mhdmr/0825-family-support-mohealthnet-report.pdf" target="_blank">667,531 Missourians</a>&nbsp;were receiving SNAP benefits, according to the Family Support Division. More than 41% of them were children.

This spring,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/03/05/ban-on-use-of-food-stamps-for-candy-soda-debated-by-missouri-lawmakers/">efforts</a>&nbsp;failed in the General Assembly to prohibit SNAP recipients from buying candy and soda with their benefits.

Gabby Picard, a spokesperson for the governor’s office, said in an email that “while no specific food items are being identified at this point in the process,” the restrictions proposed in the request reflect “initial language DSS plans to use to evaluate specific food items, upon USDA approval.”

Kehoe’s executive order also called on the department to “incentivize the purchase of fresh fruits, vegetables, and Missouri-produced meats and dairy products” with food assistance, without specifics.

Dan Shaul, executive director of the Missouri Grocers Association, which will participate in the process to implement the waiver, said that wherever Missouri decides to draw the line between “what is healthy and what is not healthy,” the changes will cause “confusion” for SNAP users and retailers.&nbsp;

Shaul gave the example from Indiana, one of&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/a-dozen-states-win-approval-to-restrict-soda-candy-for-snap-recipients/">12 states</a>&nbsp;that has secured USDA approval to restrict SNAP purchases. When Indiana’s waiver begins in January, Shaul said, Snickers bars will be excluded as candy, while&nbsp;<a href="https://indianacapitalchronicle.com/2025/06/12/retailers-researchers-criticize-indiana-plan-to-exclude-soda-and-candy-from-snap/" target="_blank">Twix will not</a>, due to a definition in the state’s tax code.

“One would think, ‘It’s got peanuts in it, so it’s got to be the food,’” Shaul said of Snickers. “It’s absolutely the candy. The Twix is considered food because it has flour in it.”

The dilemma for SNAP users, Woody said, is knowing which foods are eligible and which are not.&nbsp;

“You bring a whole cart of groceries, and you put them on there,” she said, “and then they’re like, ‘You can’t have that,’ or ‘You can’t have that.’”

Shaul said that although retailers will bear the upfront cost of reconfiguring their systems to implement restrictions, some of the expense will be passed to shoppers, whether they use SNAP or not.

“There’s going to be administrative costs, there’s going to be training costs, and ultimately, in an industry that [has] normally a 1% margin, any cost is going to be felt at the end, at the consumer,” Shaul said. “We’ll do everything we can to minimize it, but there’s truly going to be issues.”

State Sen. Maggie Nurrenbern, a Democrat from Kansas City, questioned whether the request would help low-income Missourians to eat healthier.

“The issue with using a stick instead of a carrot when it comes to this approach of healthy eating is that we are doing nothing, nothing at all, to actually help get healthy food into the household of Missourians,” Nurrenbern said.

Kehoe’s executive order called on the state to incentivize SNAP users to buy healthy, locally produced food, but did not specify how the state should do this.

Kehoe called for the expansion of programs like&nbsp;<a href="https://doubleupheartland.org/" target="_blank">Double Up Food Bucks</a>, which allows SNAP users to double the fresh fruits and vegetables they bring home from select grocery stores and farmers markets.

Karissa Kary, president of the Missouri Farmers Market Association, said vendors would welcome more support for Double Up Food Bucks.

“The state stepping up to help support that further would be incredible, because it allows opportunities for both farmers and people on food assistance to get the freshest, most local food that is in the area,” Kary said.

But Kary said that although vendors would benefit from more incentives to buy fresh produce, they are wary of more state rules on top of impending changes to the program on the federal level. Bakers, for instance, will need “clarity” on what Missouri will count as a “prepared dessert.”

“It is very difficult for farmers markets to get the accreditation and everything they need to accept SNAP dollars,” Kary said. “So the fear of losing it or being fined for doing something inadvertently incorrect is really scary for a lot of small vendors…let alone the farmers they serve.”

Nurrenbern said many people on SNAP don’t have access to farmers markets and shopping choices are limited in many rural areas.&nbsp;

“It is whatever [is] on those stalls that that single mom can make quickly before she heads out the door for second or third shift,” Nurrenbern said. “And God forbid she needs a Diet Coke so she can keep going to go to that third shift that starts at 11 p.m.”

Missouri seeks federal waiver to ban candy, soda and desserts from SNAP purchases

HARRISON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Sunday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Honda 110F driven by an 11-year-old Blythesdale boy was northbound in a pasture along Route t and East 182nd Street one mile south of Blythesdale.

The dirt bike struck a small ditch and the driver was ejected. North Missouri EMS transported the boy to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. He was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

11-year-old Mo. boy injured in dirt bike accident

BUCHANAN COUNTY —A St. Joseph man was taken into custody after an accident that occurred just after 11:30p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph involving a patrol vehicle.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Chevy 2500 driven by&nbsp; a 24-year-old Alec M.. Gray of St. Joseph was westbound on Howard Street in St. Joseph.&nbsp; The driver failed to stop at the stop sigh at 20th Street. The Chevy struck a southbound 2024 Dodge Durango Patrol vehicle driven by a 42-year-old St. Joseph man, according the MSHP.

Law enforcement arrested Gray on requested felony charges of resisting arrest, misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, hit and run; operate a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner; for no auto insurance and on an Andrew County misdemeanor failure to appear warrant on an original charge involving a non-moving traffic violation.&nbsp; 

Medical cleared the driver of the Dodge Durango at the scene of the crash. The MSHP did not release the name of the Trooper.

St. Joseph man jailed after crash with a patrol vehicle 

ANDREW COUNTY —A St. Joseph man was injured in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Saturday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Lexus GX460 driven by a 48-year-old St. Joseph man was westbound on Route E three miles east of Savannah. The SUV struck a deer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Andrew County EMS transported a 47-year-old male passenger to Mosaic Life Care. Th edriver was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

St. Joseph man injured after SUV strikes a deer

BROWN COUNTY—Law enforcement in northeast Kansas are investigating another scam.

In the midst of everything else, we now have a Border Patrol scam circulating our county, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

 Residents are receiving calls from men with heavy foreign accents&nbsp; claiming to be Border Patrol Agents.&nbsp; They inform the residents&nbsp; that there is an active warrant for their arrest and a $500 bond must be posted over the phone or they will come to their home and arrest the resident immediately.&nbsp; 

According to those reporting the alleged crime,&nbsp; the callers are very rude, pushy and insistent that they must be paid or else. Caller ID's showed a restricted number. One person stated that they had never been in trouble in their&nbsp; life, and it alarmed them that they were threatened to be arrested.

Sheriff Merchant explained that this was a scare tactic that scammers use in order to extort money from honest, hard working people.

Merchant assured everyone that Border Patrol does not work this way and you will not be arrested. He advised anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately.&nbsp; If you have any questions or concerns, notify your local law enforcement at once.

CLINTON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Friday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;2025 Vitacci moped driven by a 45-year-old Plattsburg man was northbound on Town and Country Drive at Brandy Wine Court in Plattsburg. The vehicle traveled off the east side of the road and overturned.

Tri-County Ambulance transported the driver to Liberty Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

Missouri man injured in moped accident

SALEM — Spending 12 hours a day in his combine this week, harvesting amber rows of soybeans he planted in the spring, Andrew Streff has time to think — and it’s hard not to think about the ongoing trade dispute with China.

The country is boycotting purchases of U.S. soybeans in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

“China hasn’t purchased any soybeans from the United States this year, thanks to the president,” said Streff, who farms near Salem. “Our beans are the cheapest in the world, by about $2 a bushel, but this trade war is keeping them out of China — our biggest customer.”

Robert Lee is harvesting 300 acres of soybeans on his land near De Smet. He said many farmers are hesitant to blame Trump for bad bean prices.

“But the fact is, China imported 120 million metric tons of soybeans this year and not one bushel came from the U.S.,” Lee said. “That’s a direct result of this trade war.”

Farmers were similarly affected by trade disputes during Trump’s first term. Congress responded with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/IF/PDF/IF11289/IF11289.3.pdf" target="_blank">$28 billion</a>&nbsp;of aid for farmers in 2018 and 2019, according to the Congressional Research Service. The relief paid for farmers’ lost income by providing direct payments in its place.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, said during a Sept. 26 public event in Rapid City that the federal government will probably have to help farmers again.

“I have talked to the president about this, because some of this is a result of tariff policies, trade relationships, etc. — China’s not buying soybeans today,” Thune said. “And so I think, inevitably, what’s going to happen is they’ll probably end up doing what we did a few years ago, because of loss of markets.”

Thune said that’s something “none of us want.”

“But I think some of that tariff revenue that’s coming in probably will end up heading in that direction,” he said.

Trump’s tariffs will increase federal tax revenues by an estimated $171 billion this year, according to a Sept. 26 report from the&nbsp;<a href="https://taxfoundation.org/research/all/federal/trump-tariffs-trade-war/" target="_blank">Tax Foundation</a>, a nonpartisan, tax policy research nonprofit.

On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the Trump administration is considering aid to farmers. He said in an<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/02/cnbc-transcript-us-treasury-secretary-scott-bessent-speaks-with-cnbcs-squawk-box-today.html" target="_blank">&nbsp;interview</a>&nbsp;with CNBC that farmers “should expect some news on Tuesday” about “substantial support for our farmers, especially the soybean farmers.”

Jerry Schmitz is the executive director of the South Dakota Soybean Association. He said U.S. soybean prices are down more than a dollar per bushel from last year, from over $11 down to $10, with South Dakota prices another 80 cents to $1.35 lower. Local grain elevators are struggling because exports through the Pacific Northwest into Asian countries have slowed to a trickle.

Based on the number of soybean acres planted this year, Schmitz said a $1 drop in price equates to about $250 million of lost income for South Dakota farmers.

A tariff is a tax paid by importers, with the cost often passed along in prices charged to customers. Schmitz said the impact of tariffs on farmers goes beyond the obvious. An example is a rise in fertilizer prices, “partly due to inflation, but exacerbated by the tariffs.”

Streff, the Salem-area farmer, also works as a commodities broker in Mitchell. He said farmers like him who locked in a price with a grain buyer months before harvest are doing better, but “you were gambling on the future.”

“A lot of farmers were hoping the president learned from the last time around,” he said. “But it didn’t surprise me — he campaigned on doing these tariffs. The U.S. elected someone who likes to pick fights with other countries, and now we’re in the middle of it.”

He said others waited to see how the crop would turn out and if trade relations with China would improve. They haven’t.

Farm leaders and state officials are creating new domestic soybean uses, including a&nbsp;<a href="https://southdakotasearchlight.com/2025/09/09/500-million-soybean-processing-plant-opens-in-mitchell/" target="_blank">$500 million soybean processing plant</a>&nbsp;in Mitchell that will mostly use soybeans to make renewable diesel and livestock feed.

Streff said that’s encouraging, but it won’t replace the demand of a country with 1.4 billion people who like soybean-fed pork.

“It’s not going to solve all our problems,” he said.

It’s a point Thune echoed while in Rapid City.

“We need to get the Chinese market back at some point because we sell a ton,” Thune said. “Sixty percent of our soybeans are exported, mostly to China. And so we’ve got to have those export markets.”

December corn closed down 2 3/4 cents and March corn was down 2 1/4 cents. November soybeans closed down 5 3/4 cents and January soybeans were down 4 3/4 cents. December KC wheat closed down 2 cents, December Chicago wheat was up 1/2 cents, December Minneapolis wheat was down 3/4 cents.

It was a slow day to close the week for futures markets as the U.S. government shutdown is in its third day, resulting in a lack of government reports to influence traders. The late week rally across row crop futures gradually exhausted itself through the session Friday, led by soybean futures, which eventually settled over a dime lower than the daily high on the November contract. Outside markets leaned positive to close the week with the Dow Jones Industrial Average accelerating weekly gains to a fresh record on Friday. Investors are currently showing no major concerns regarding the government shutdown, focusing instead on an expected rate cut in the Fed's meeting late this month. Energy markets ended the week higher, with crude oil futures narrowly avoiding five straight lower sessions amid support in the low $60 per barrel range.

The live cattle complex battled through, as the market continues to feel stalemated, not seeing the support it needs to drive the contracts much higher. Between weaker cash cattle prices and lower waning boxed beef prices, the market is stuck trading steady/somewhat lower as there's not enough support to do anything different for the time being, but the market found enough for all contracts to finish in the green. Before the week ends, there should still be some more cash cattle trade to develop; however, there's only been a thin movement in the North so far, and virtually no movement yet at all in the South. Asking prices are noted at $235 to $237 in the South and $362 plus in the North.

The feeder cattle complex was back to trading moderately higher as traders are currently willing to mildly support the contracts. The live cattle complex ended giving enough support and the market was able to maintain the mild rally through the day's end.

The lean hog complex is finally seeing support work its way into the market as pork cutout values were higher, and trades allowed the contracts to trade mildly higher as well. The biggest factor helping drive the carcass price higher this morning is the belly's $6.82 jump, and the picnics $4.24 gain as well.

The Renewable Fuels Association applauded California Governor Gavin Newsome for signing Assembly Bill 30 into law. AB30, which passed unanimously out of both the Assembly and the Senate, immediately legalizes lower-cost E15 fuel in the Golden State. Prior to the signing, California was the only remaining state in the nation where E15 sales weren’t allowed. RFA President and CEO Geoff Cooper said, “California is on the road to lower gas prices and a cleaner future for families across the state,” and “Many other states have already seen the benefits of E15, including healthier air, better engine performance, and costs savings at the pump.”

 California drivers are about to experience those same benefits for themselves, and RFA thanked Governor Newsom for voicing his support for E15 through the legislative process. Recent studies have shown that E15 could save California drivers $2.7 billion annually, or about $200 per household, while significantly cutting tailpipe pollutants.

The U.S. federal government shutdown will stop some payments to farmers and also delay access to federal farm loans. Reuters said it’s one more blow for producers already struggling with low crop prices, record-high debts, and a trade war at the height of the fall harvest. Republican and Democratic lawmakers couldn’t agree on a plan to fund the federal government, and this will last until one party gets enough votes for its funding plan. 

“Even short interruptions in payments could deepen farmers’ economic turmoil,” said Chad Hart, an agricultural economist with Iowa State University. “After all, it costs money to run those combines at harvest.”  While administration of nutrition programs and food inspections will continue, much of USDA’s other work will cease. That includes processing farm loans and making payments to farmers, including billions in disaster aid. It will also not process annual commodity and land conservation payments typically issued by October.

U.S. crop prices again shook off a shaky start to the session on Thursday, with the soybean market leading the way higher as traders continue to look ahead to the month-end summit between Presidents Trump and Xi as a reason for optimism and a reason to remove short-side risk out of portfolios amid shrinking soybean supply side ideas as well. Corn and wheat futures were mainly along for the ride on Thursday but also managed to put together modestly higher sessions. Outside markets were overall a negative weight on agricultural prices for Thursday, with mixed equities as the Dow Jones pushes back toward record highs while the S&amp;P reversed off record highs on Thursday as well. The U.S. Dollar Index was firmer on Thursday while energy markets fell again, breaking support near $62 per barrel to trade to the lowest level since late May.

Without any substantial fundamental support having developed in the complex this week, the live cattle contracts were yet again trading lower. And yes, the spot December live cattle contract was again trading below its 40-day moving average as traders continued to look around for immediate support -- but came up short handed from both a fundamental and technical sense. Asking prices are noted in the South at $237 to $240, and at $363 plus in the North. No new trade has developed following the light business that transpired on Wednesday where some dressed cattle in Nebraska sold at $360 -- $5.00 lower than last week's weighted average. Some bids are on the table at $230 to $233 live in Kansas, and $230 live in Nebraska and $357 to $360 dressed.

Following in the live cattle market's footsteps, the feeder cattle complex also traded lower as traders continue to struggle to find enough support to justify trading higher. Not to mention, adding only more kindling to the feeder cattle market's reasons to trade lower, the market did close lower Wednesday afternoon after traders decided they didn't possess enough support to be edging up against the market's resistance thresholds.

The lean hog complex continued to scale lower and lower as the market again left without enough support to help traders put a bottom in the downward spiral that the market's currently been on. Pork cutout values are again lower this morning with the picnic being the market begging hindrance as it alone is done $6.62.

U.S. crop markets were en route to another lower finish Wednesday, with corn and wheat futures in particular continuing to trade the fallout from bearish Sept. 1 stocks reported by USDA on Tuesday. However, the tide quickly turned shortly after noon when President Trump posted on Truth Social he will meet with Chinese President Xi in four weeks, and soybeans will be a "major topic of discussion." This ultimately sent soybean futures surging over a dime in the last hour plus of trade and ultimately 19 1/4 cents higher than the daily low, pulling corn futures higher as well. Outside markets Wednesday were mixed, as the featured macroeconomic news was the government shutdown which took effect late Tuesday/early Wednesday. Equity markets turned higher after ADP's September employment report indicated a slowing labor market and pointed toward another rate cut in the next Fed meeting. Energy markets were lower after Wednesday's Petroleum Status report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed a general building of crude and crude product inventories in the U.S. and ahead of this weekend's OPEC+ production meeting.

Despite the U.S. government shutdown, the live cattle complex trudged on with business as normal. The live cattle contracts traded fully higher into Wednesday's noon hour, with yet again the market's deferred contracts seeing the biggest day-over-day gains. But even so, the spot December contract was still trading slightly below the market's 40-day moving average, which continues to be a threshold the market is struggling to conquer and the contracts finished the day no better than mixed. Still no cash cattle trade has developed but asking prices are now noted in the South at $237 to $240 but are still elusive in the North. With no packer interest having developed yet, it's likely the week's trade will be delayed another day if not two.

The feeder cattle complex was also scaling higher into Wednesday's noon hour as the market points to the corn complex's continued decline as a slightly bullish factor. The market is growing closer to resistance levels which could cause traders some angst, but traders were content to scale the contracts higher until the reversal in the grain complexes, that triggered some late session selling and the feeder contracts finished in the red all but a few far deferred contracts.

The lean hog complex continued to struggle as the market is currently trading below support at $87.00 in the spot December contract -- which has been a threshold the market has respected since early September. And again, adding to the market's disappointment is the fact that pork cutout values were lower once again today.

The USDA’s Grain Stocks Report showed corn stocks down 13 percent from last year, soybean stocks are eight percent lower, and all wheat stocks are up six percent from 2024. Old crop corn stocks in all positions on September 1, 2025, totaled 1.53 billion bushels, down 13 percent from September 1, 2024. Both on-farm and off-farm stocks were down from last year. 

Old crop soybeans stored in all positions on September 1, 2025, totaled 316 million bushels, down eight percent from September 1, 2024. Both on-farm and off-farm stocks were lower. All wheat stored in all positions on September 1, 2025, totaled 2.12 billion bushels, up six percent from a year ago. Based on the 2024 end of the marketing year analysis, corn for grain production was revised up 25 million bushels from the prior estimate. 2024 soybean production was revised up 7.7 million bushels from the previous estimate.

Grain markets were under pressure through Tuesday's session with selling intensifying on the release of overall bearish quarterly Grain Stocks and Small Grains Summary reports from USDA. Outside markets also leaned negatively on ag futures on Tuesday, with crude oil futures retreating to start the week back toward 2-month support near $62 per barrel. Meanwhile, equities were lower on Tuesday as well as investors weigh what a potential government shutdown could mean for markets moving forward, with bearish concerns being the potential for interference with the Federal Reserve's path to rate cuts, as well as job market concerns amid the potential for layoffs at the federal level.

Although the market started the day off weaker, the live cattle complex collectively advanced its position and traded slightly higher into Tuesday's closing bell. Unfortunately, the market continues to stagger around its 40-day moving average in the spot December contract as traders don't know which way to truly push the market just yet. On one hand, they look at the market's immediate fundamentals and are disappointed to see fed cash cattle prices and boxed beef prices continuing to drift lower as they typically do seasonally. But on the other hand, traders have also recognized that from a 10,000-foot view perspective, the market is still incredibly bullish with herd supplies at a multi-decade low, and the fact remaining that supplies can't be rebuilt overnight. Still no cash cattle trade has developed and it's not likely that any trade develops until Wednesday at the earliest. Bids and asking prices remain elusive at this point too.

The feeder cattle complex was not being as cautious as the live cattle market, as its contracts were confidently trading $3.00 higher into Tuesday's noon hour. And with the feeder cattle complex not up against immediate resistance pressure, it's likely that even if the live cattle market does weaken, the feeder cattle contracts should be able to maintain their momentum for the short term.

It was a painful morning for the lean hog complex as the market continued to break lower. Seeming unable to maintain the gains made just last week, the lean hog complex is continuing to back away from the highs scored late last week as fundamental support isn't as strong as traders need it to be.

The August Rural Mainstreet Index covering a multi-state region shows one-fifth of grain farmers will experience a negative cash flow in 2025. For the seventh time this year, the overall regional economic index sank below growth-neutral, falling to 38.5 in September, down from 48.1 in August. Also, for the 16th time in the past 17 months, farmland prices sank below growth-neutral. Elevated interest rates, higher input costs, and below breakeven prices caused the downward pressure on farmland. 

Farm equipment sales dropped below growth neutral for the 25th straight month. Three out of four bank CEOs reported that tariff increases have had a negative impact on farm operations. “Weak agricultural commodity prices for grain producers continue to dampen economic activity in the ten-state region covered by the Index,” said Dr. Ernie Goss. “Falling agricultural commodity prices represent the greatest threat to agricultural banks over the next 12 months.”

Rural Mainstreet Index turns negative

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement in Riley County are investigating a suspect on new allegations after an investigation and arrest in Shawnee County.

Just after 11a.m. Monday, police arrested Nichole Morehead, 22, of Ogden in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. 

This arrest stems from original charges of distribution of fentanyl, unlawful use of a telecommunication facility to distribute fentanyl, and theft. Morehead was issued no bond and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this report.&nbsp; She was arrested in Shawnee County on Friday, according to online jail records and later transferred to Riley County.

Police: Kansas woman accused of selling fentanyl

DOUGLAS COUNTY—A Kansas High School student is being hailed as a hero for taking action to save a woman's life.

Adrian Mendoza, a senior from Free State High School in Lawrence has attended the Lawrence Kansas&nbsp; Police Department's Teen Police Academy the last two summers, according to a social media report from Lawrence Police.

There, he learned life-saving techniques that he used when there were needed.  Adrian was serving food at a local independent living facility where he saw someone choking and another person struggling to help.  He says he doesn't even remember thinking about it.  His training took over and he performed the Heimlich maneuver the officers taught him. A chicken bone dislodged in her throat and the woman is fine today.

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office is demanding health records of Planned Parenthood abortion patients in an effort to argue in favor of keeping in place several regulations that limit access to the procedure.

The office is asking for patient medical records, incident reports, “adverse event documentation” and communications about patient care,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.courts.mo.gov/fv/c/Plaintiffs%20Corrected%20Motion%20to%20Quash%20State%20Defendants%20Subpoenas,%20Enforce%20Rule%2057.03,%20and%20Extend%20Protective%20Order%20and%20Suggestions%20in%20Support.PDF?courtCode=16&amp;di=28975693" target="_blank">according to court records</a>. Also requested through a subpoena were operational and clinical protocols, equipment patient records, contractual arrangements and documentation of compliance.&nbsp;

“Despite the Missouri attorney general’s blatant attempts to overturn the will of the people, all patients expect and have the right for their medical records to be private,” leadership with Planned Parenthood Great Plains, Planned Parenthood Great Rivers and the ACLU of Missouri said in a joint statement. “Politicians have no place in the exam room with patients and their medical providers, and that’s why we will keep fighting for patients and their rights.”

The attorney general’s office, newly&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/09/09/catherine-hanaway-missouri-attorney-general-andrew-bailey/">under the leadership of Catherine Hanaway,</a>&nbsp;did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.&nbsp;

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office also subpoenaed two former Planned Parenthood Great Rivers board members, one physician contracted by Planned Parenthood Great Rivers and the chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, who was handed a subpoena during recess of a court hearing related to abortion access on Sept. 10.

“This is nothing more than an attempt to harass (Planned Parenthood) and should not be permitted by the court,” attorneys for the clinics wrote in a court filing asking Jackson County Circuit Judge Jerri Zhang to throw out the subpoenas.&nbsp;

Last November, Missourians voted to&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/11/05/missouri-voters-overturn-states-near-total-abortion-ban/">codify the right to reproductive health care</a>, including abortion up to the point of fetal viability, in the state constitution. A day later, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU of Missouri&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/11/06/missouri-abortion-access-planned-parenthood-lawsuit-amendment-3/">sued the state in an effort to take down several abortion regulations&nbsp;</a>that remain part of state statute, arguing that those regulations are now unconstitutional because they burden abortion patients and providers.&nbsp;

That lawsuit is set to go to trial in January. Until then, Zhang temporarily enjoined —&nbsp;or struck down —&nbsp;some of the regulations,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/07/03/missouri-abortion-rights-amendment-trumps-most-restrictions-judge-rules/">allowing Planned Parenthood to begin offering procedural abortions again</a>.&nbsp;

Planned Parenthood is also awaiting a decision from Zhang after asking her to enjoin even more state regulations that the clinic argues are preventing clinics from prescribing mifepristone and misoprostol, which are used in medication abortions. As of Monday,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/09/11/laws-regulations-medication-abortion-mifepristone-misoprostol-missouri/">Missourians could not access medication abortion&nbsp;</a>from an in-state provider because of these regulations.

Planned Parenthood is currently offering procedural abortions at its clinics in Kansas City,&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/03/04/abortion-returns-columbia-missouri-planned-parenthood-clinic/">Columbia</a>&nbsp;and St. Louis.&nbsp;

Last month, the Missouri Court of Appeals gave the green light for the attorney general’s office to subpoena patient health information in a separate case involving the&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/09/16/appeals-court-gives-missouri-ag-pathway-to-transgender-center-patient-records/">Washington University Transgender Center.</a>&nbsp;But it has to be done under more stringent parameters, the court ruled.&nbsp;

The attorney general’s office initially requested “all electronic health records of (the center’s) clients” and a list of all the center’s patients. The higher court is now requiring that only the minimum required health information be turned over.

The appeals court reversed a<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/07/08/judge-rules-missouri-ag-has-no-right-to-medical-records-of-transgender-minors-at-wash-u/">&nbsp;ruling last year&nbsp;</a>in which a district judge said the center did not have to turn over patient information protected by the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPAA.

In that case,&nbsp; the attorney general’s office argued that it qualifies as a<a href="https://www.courts.mo.gov/fv/c/Appellants%20Brief.PDF?courtCode=EA&amp;di=513469" target="_blank">&nbsp;“health oversight agency,”&nbsp;</a>and as such should be privy to patient information protected by HIPPA.&nbsp;

Missouri attorney general subpoenas Planned Parenthood for patient abortion records

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City man faces multiple charges for a shooting at a home in Kansas City, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson&nbsp;&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2734/Roscoe-COMPLAINTREDACTED">Nathan Roscoe</a>, 42,&nbsp;faces 1st Degree Assault, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm charges.

On September 27, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence regarding shots fired and located the victim who was alert and conscious. The victim had an obvious wound on his head and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the head, a<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2735/Roscoe-PCREDACTED-1">ccording to court records</a>.

Based on witness reports, Roscoe was identified as the shooter and was still in the residence before complying with the deputies’ orders and being taken into custody.&nbsp;

Roscoe remains jailed on a $50,000 bond.&nbsp;

Victim survived after shot in the head by Kansas City felon

BUTLER COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a fatal shooting at a Butler County Lake.

Just after 4 a.m. Monday, Butler County Dispatch received a report of a shooting at a campsite in the Bluestem Point area of El Dorado Lake, according to Butler County Undersheriff Daimon Cundiff.

First responders found 57-year-old Rodney Logan of Augusta unresponsive from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; Deputies took a suspect into custody. The sheriff's office did not release his name. Investigators are working to determine what led up to the shooting.

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement are currently investigating a vehicle theft from a Ford dealership in Salina.

On Friday, employees from the Long McArthur Ford dealership,&nbsp;3450 S 9th Street in Salina, reported that between 10:50 am and 11p.m. on September 28, a&nbsp;used&nbsp;red 2013 Camaro&nbsp;was stolen. The car possibly had an unknown dealer tag. Loss of value is $44,900.

The suspect appeared to be a male from surveillance footage.

Glacier National Park remains open to visitors during the federal government shutdown, which a former superintendent said could lead to trash pileup, a lack of communication for visitors and limited emergency response operations.&nbsp;

Last month, former Glacier National Park Superintendent Jeff Mow joined more than 40 former national park superintendents in signing a&nbsp;<a href="https://protectnps.org/2025/09/25/former-nps-superintendents-urge-secretary-burgum-to-close-national-parks-if-government-shuts-down/" target="_blank">letter urging</a>&nbsp;the federal government to close National Park Service sites in the event of a government shutdown.&nbsp;
