Lindley Edwin Hoopes, 77, of Shenandoah, IA, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025 in his home surrounded by family. Born on February 29, 1948 in Ames, lowa, Linn lived a life full of service, loyalty, and love.

In 1969, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in Vietnam, where he served in the 23rd Infantry Division and received the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnamese Defense Medal. It was an experience that forever shaped his deep sense of patriotism and resilience.

Linn married the love of his life, Ruth, in 1978 after knowing her for just 28 days, a decision that led to 47 years of devoted marriage, celebrated most recently on July 28th.

He was the proud father of four daughters: Crystal (Nate) Wittmer and their children Lillian and Gavin of Shenandoah; Stacey (Zach) Hoopes of Des Moines; Kelly (Keith) Bowers of Memphis, TN; and Lindsey Hoopes and her son, Dorian of Des Moines. Among his daughters and grandchildren, he is survived by his wife Ruth, mother-in-law Ruth Maynhart of Jupiter, FL, sister Linda Raeford of Des Moines, his furry friend Izzy, and a plethora of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Joan and Joseph Hoopes, infant son Jonathan Joseph, father-in-law John Maynhart, and brother-in-law Don Raeford. His love for his family was fierce, unwavering, and widely recognized.

Known for his sharp memory and warm presence, Linn never forgot a name or a face, and made friends everywhere he went. Whether it was a quick conversation at the store or a long talk on the porch, people felt seen and valued in his presence.

Linn leaves behind a legacy of laughter, service, and kindness, a life well-lived and deeply loved. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Linn's family would like to thank the team at St. Croix Hospice for their loving support.

Per Linn's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the family.
