
KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City man is in jail after his girlfriend’s young child shot herself with his unsecured firearm this week..
Syncere Taylor, 19, faces one count of 1st Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class B felony carrying up to 15 years in prison, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson.
According to court records, Sugar Creek police responded to a residence on Feb. 9 regarding a shooting. Taylor told officers someone had been shot in the apartment. Officers found a toddler inside the residence suffering from a gunshot wound to her abdomen.
In an interview with detectives, Taylor told officers that he was walking down the hallway when he heard a gunshot. When he entered the master bedroom, he found the toddler lying on the bed with a gunshot wound. He confirmed his firearm had been left on the bed in the master bedroom.
The toddler was listed in stable condition. Authorities released no additional details.
