A proposal to suspend Missouri’s gas tax is getting a response from transportation leaders.
Missouri Department of Transportation Director Ed Hassinger was recently asked how losing several months of gas tax revenue could affect projects across the state.
“We're aware of those efforts, but until we know what that really looks like, it's pretty premature to comment on that. We take the revenue we get and we do the best we can with it, so we will continue to do that," Hassinger says.
Hassinger says drivers can already take steps to save on fuel costs.
“Drive the speed limit. If you drive the speed limit, you will save gas. I think that's probably the best advice," Hassinger explains
Missouri House members are calling for a pause on the state’s 29-and-a-half-cent gas tax through the end of the year. The plan is expected to cost about $713 million, with general revenue covering the gap for MoDOT, cities and counties.
