National Farmers Union is opposing the proposed merger of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. NFU is asking the Surface Transportation Board to reject the deal, arguing it would further reduce competition in an already consolidated rail industry. The Surface Transportation Board is currently reviewing the proposed transaction and has not ruled on its merits.
NFU President Rob Larew says previous railroad mergers have left farmers with fewer shipping options, higher rates and less reliable service. The organization says another major consolidation could increase transportation costs for agricultural shippers already dealing with high input expenses and uncertain trade conditions. NFU is also calling for stronger rail competition rules, greater Surface Transportation Board oversight and enforcement of antitrust laws.
