Global food prices could continue climbing through next year as international conflicts, rising production costs and unfavorable weather threaten agricultural supplies. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization warns that disruptions to Black Sea grain shipments and shipping routes through the Red Sea are increasing transportation expenses. Meanwhile, conflict involving Iran has driven fuel prices higher and disrupted fertilizer shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Dry conditions associated with El Niño are also threatening agricultural production in India and Southeast Asia. Wheat prices have increased more than 30 percent this year, while rice prices in major Asian exporting countries have risen between 10 and 13 percent. FAO economists warn the effects could become more pronounced late this year and persist throughout 2027. Lower-income consumers are particularly vulnerable as rising food costs place additional pressure on household budgets.
