Duane Lewis Bowers, age 84, passed away on February 9, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on December 10, 1941, in Bedford, Iowa, to Harold and Avis Bowers.
A proud graduate of Bedford High School, Duane went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army for 20 years, including overseas assignments in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. His military career reflected his dedication, strength, and sense of duty. He retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class (E 7). After military retirement, he continued supporting the Army as a contract cook for 10 years.
On January 26, 1966, Duane married Sheryl Spies. Together they shared 60 years of marriage, building a life grounded in love, commitment, and family.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sheryl Bowers; his children, Susan, Diane, Suzanne, and Stacy; his sister, Sharon Arthur of Clarinda, Iowa; and his brother, Alan Bowers of Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah; his son, Steven; and his parents, Harold and Avis Bowers.
Duane will be remembered for his faithful service to his country, his deep love for his family, and the steady, dependable presence he brought to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, resilience, and love.
Graveside Services for Duane Lewis Bowers, 84, from San Antonio, Texas formerly of Bedford, Iowa will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 12:00 PM at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa with Military Rites. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM at Cummings Family Funeral Home in Bedford. Memorials may be directed towards the family to be established in Duane's honor.
